A guest room is a small gift you give to the people you love. When it is designed with care, visiting family and friends feel truly welcome, and you can enjoy their stay without worrying about whether they are comfortable. Here is how to create a guest room that feels like a boutique hotel, even if it doubles as an office or hobby space.
Invest in the bed first
Nothing matters more than a good night's sleep. Choose a quality mattress, a supportive base and a mix of pillows in different firmness levels. Layer crisp sheets, a light blanket and a duvet so guests can adjust to their comfort. If the room has to work as a study too, a well-made sofa bed or daybed can be surprisingly comfortable.
Make room for their things
Guests appreciate somewhere to unpack. Clear a few drawers or add a small chest, leave space in the wardrobe with spare hangers, and provide a luggage rack or bench so suitcases stay off the floor. A hook on the back of the door is handy for robes and towels.
- Bedside tables on both sides with a lamp and a spot for a phone and glass of water.
- A mirror, ideally full length, for getting ready.
- A charging spot near the bed so devices are easy to power up.
Create a calm palette
Soft, restful colours help guests unwind in an unfamiliar space. Gentle neutrals, muted blues or warm greens work well, with texture coming from linen, wool and timber. Keep decoration simple so the room feels peaceful rather than cluttered with personal items.
Control light and sound
Blackout curtains or lined blinds help guests sleep in, especially if they are adjusting to a different time zone. Rugs and upholstered furniture soften noise from the rest of the house, and a small fan or sound machine can mask unfamiliar sounds.
Add thoughtful hotel touches
The little details are what guests remember: fresh towels folded at the end of the bed, a basket of toiletries, a carafe of water, the Wi-Fi details on a small card and a few books or magazines to browse. Fresh flowers or a plant bring the room to life.
Sleep in your guest room for one night yourself. You will quickly discover what is missing.
